The impacts of tidying, as shown in the series are amazingly surprising, sentimental and transformational in the lives of the people Marie meets.
Tidying is a festival!
Marie Kondo
Marie Kondo is famous for running an immensely successful home organizing business that she started when she was just 19 years old. Her New York Times bestseller book, explaining her tidying principles, has sold more than 8 million copies in 40 languages. In a very short time, Kondo has become phenomenon and a household name across the globe.
Most impressive idea shared by Marie is that tidying up can affect a person’s relationships with others and their work as well. The basic concept for both the series is that people must find space for just those things in their life that spark joy. She beautifully connects the process of tidying up to the emotional and spiritual aspects of people’s lives.
According to KonMari method you should never think twice, deciding which items truly serve a purpose in your life and which you can do without. This is something Kondo coined as “sparking joy” in your heart. To decide if something sparks joy, put your desk items all in one pile on the floor, and then go through each item one by one. If you feel the spark, great, but if you don’t feel the spark, express your gratitude to the item for being part of your life before moving it out.
The first episode it is shown that. Logan’s Garden is a plant nursery in Los Angeles run by Jimmy, who has been gardening since he was four and his 35-year-old son, Logan, who has been gardening since he was 16 Jimmy is still reluctant to pass the business in his son’s hands There is a mental gap between Jimmy and his son. Marie comes in the scene and starts applying her famous KonMari Method™,going by category (seeds, tools, stationery and so on), anything that doesn’t “spark joy” must be thanked for its service . While the whole tidying up process is running, in between father and son are joined by their daughter/sister Porter, who start to bond over their hopes for the business. The result is a beautiful makeover of the whole nursary leaving the family with better bonding and connection with each other. The following two stories are also very impactful portraying how powerful can be act of tidying up can be getting a fresh start in both personal and professional level!
Ideas which impacted me a lot while watching this series-
1) Idea of expressing joy for clothes while folding, giving love to clothes, expressing gratitude for things while donating.
2) Having sentimental box in the house and storing all the items, cards, gifts given by family members which spark joy in your life.
3) Setting up a power corner with a chair and table in any room with candles, flowers and other items which can refresh you anytime.
4) Idea of dividing the family task list as a couple as per each others strength.
5) Expressing gratitude and joy while folding clothes and letting go things which are not in use.
